Conference Theme

Ten broad themes/ topics have been identified to cover various areas of transportation engineering: 


It is important to note that there are several cross disciplinary topics which are covered by more than one theme/ track. For example, works related to public transport may be submitted under track ‘C’ or track ‘E’ or track ‘F’ or track ‘J’ depending on the context of the work. In a similar manner, works related to non-motorized transport may also be submitted under track ‘C’, or track ‘E’, or track ‘F’ or track ‘J’ depending on the specific focus of the work. The track for works related to topics which are not mentioned directly under various tracks may be decided suitably according to the focus of the work.

  1. Air, Water and Rail Transport
    This track deals with the topics related to all the transport modes which are alternatives to road transport and focused on (but not limited to) airline network design; aircraft routing and scheduling; aircraft maintenance planning; revenue management; crew management; recovery; airport operations; air traffic control operations; river traffic monitoring; harbour and fleeting services; barge logistics; boat operations; vessel itineraries; lock congestion; lock service interruptions and lock control; container terminals; locomotives, passenger coaches and freight cars operations; urban rail transit operations; light rail systems operations; container freight stations; rail yards operations; study of railway track response and prediction; analysis of railroad structures; design of railway track structure; construction issues and case studies; rail traffic management systems; station control systems and revenue management.
  2. Freight Transportation
    This track deals with the topics related to all modes of transportation used in the context of freight and focused on (but not limited to) logistics; freight transport operation and performance; interactions among production, logistics and traffic modes; freight traffic management; modeling of freight transport; application of improvement technologies in freight transportation; logistics during disaster management; policy issues.
  3. Traffic Management and Safety
    This track deals with the topics related to traffic management and safety and focused on (but not limited to) intersection control, ramp metering, dynamic speed limits, variable message signs, roundabouts, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), automated data collection; communication and archiving; modelling; traffic operations and control; vehicle control; routing algorithms; user response; tools/software for analysis of ITS and implementation and evaluation of ITS applications; pedestrian and (bi/tri)cycle activity models; pedestrian, bicyclist and tricyclist safety; facilities that will provide safe, comfortable, and efficient walking and bicycling/tricycling environments; human factors; connecting to other modes of transportation; evaluating transportation system performance from pedestrian and cyclist perspective.
  4. Traffic Flow and Operation
    This track deals with the topics related to road transportation system and focused on (but not limited to) traffic operations; management and control; traffic flow theory and modelling; operational effects of road geometry, signals and signs; traffic simulation; traffic control and management; design of traffic facilities like roadways, intersections, toll-plazas, parking lots, etc.; transportation network analysis.
    This track also deals with pedestrian traffic related data collection; model development and validation; standards for egress route design; evacuation; disaster analysis; urban development; regional evacuations; transport modelling; public transport transfer terminals; behavioural aspects of pedestrian movements.
  5. Travel Behaviour and Travel Demand
    This track deals with the topics related to all the transportation modes and focused on (but not limited to) travel behaviour analysis; travel demand management; demand forecasting; spatial analysis of travel patterns; econometric models; activity-based travel demand models; tour, stop and trip generation models; destination and mode choice; route choice and assignment for heterogeneous traffic networks; valuation of travel time, cost and reliability; role of subjective factors; endogeneity in travel choice dimensions; dynamics in travel decisions; alternatives to utility maximization framework.
  6. Transport Economics, Planning and Policy
    This track deals with the topics related to all the transportation modes and focused on (but not limited to) economic regulation; pricing; economic evaluation; congestion and road pricing strategies; innovative practices; user impacts of multimodal transport projects; project evaluation; cost-benefit analysis; performance measures and related resource management strategies; policy analysis; interaction with political, socioeconomic and physical environment.
  7. Pavement Materials and Design
    This track deals with all the pavement related topics and focuses on (but not limited to) characterization and modeling of roadway materials; application of new materials; study of pavement response and prediction; analysis of pavement; design of bituminous (asphalt) pavement; design of concrete pavement; design of non-conventional pavement; drainage design; construction issues and case studies.
  8. Pavement Evaluation, Rehabilitation and Maintenance
    This track deals with the topics related to evaluation, rehabilitation and maintenance of pavements and focuses on (but not limited to) structural and functional health assessment techniques for pavements; instrumentation; performance monitoring and prediction; pavement deterioration modeling; maintenance actions; alternatives and strategies; life cycle analysis; life cycle assessment; and pavement management system.
  9. Development, Financing and Implementation of Transportation Projects
    This track invites papers related to innovative construction, development, and implementation techniques. Topics related to construction equipment; construction techniques; practical issues related to implementation; geometric design standards; construction practices, project management issues, database management, land acquisition, financing of transportation infrastructure projects, performance pay factors; forensic investigations; field performance prediction; PPP models; resilient infrastructure; and case studies.
  10. Sustainable Development and Environment
    This track deals with the topics related to all the transportation modes and focused on (but not limited to) sustainable transportation and land use, energy, public health, safety, carbon dioxide emission; noise; climate change, asset management; green design and construction; storm water management; ecosystem and land surface degradation; sustainability planning and evaluation; green rating systems; case studies of best practices; and policies related to sustainable development.
